Kendrick Lamar Takes Over Super Bowl LIX
This will be the second time Kendrick hits the stage during the annual championship game. In 2022, the ‘Not Like Us’ hitmaker appeared onstage at the halftime show alongside Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, and Eminem in Los Angeles. However, this will be the first time Kendrick Lamar headlines the highly anticipated event. Kendrick discussed his opportunity to headline exclusively with Billboard.
“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one,” Lamar told the outlet in a statement.
K. Dot shared the big news with his fans in an Instagram video on Sunday, Sept. 8. In the video, he used a football throwing machine while standing in front of an American flag.
According to Billboard, Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019, allowing Jay-Z to oversee the league’s entertainment programming and social justice initiatives. NBC News adds that Jay-Z praised Kendrick Lamar’s artistry in a statement, stating his impact will be felt for years to come.
“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come,” Hov explained.
Social Media Reacts
The Roommates quickly expressed their opinions on Kendrick headlining the Super Bowl halftime show under The Shade Room’s Instagram report. Many argued that another rapper should have been chosen due to the event’s location this year.
Then Instagram user @donnyism wrote, “Anybody who thinks Not Like Us is his only hit doesn’t listen to music and shouldn’t be taken seriously. This not even his first halftime show.”
Another Instagram user, @divine.saika, wrote, “We want Cash money, Young Money, Wayne, you know the real culture out there. They play in our faces every time, lol.”
Finally, Instagram user @ teambakari87 wrote, “17x Grammy award winner, Pulitzer Prize winner, sold millions of records… KING KENDRICK!!!!!! this about to be a black a** show! 🔥”
Kendrick’s 2024 Takeover & Accomplishments
2024 has been quite the year for K. Dot. His rap rivalry with Drake has become one of the most iconic feuds in the music industry. The back-and-forth between the two emcees sparked millions of reactions across social media platforms when it first kicked off in the spring.
Then Kendrick’s single, ‘Not Like Us,’ aimed at Drizzy, became the unofficial song of the summer. NBC News reports that the record debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly became the fastest rap song to reach 700 million streams on Spotify. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Kendrick as he is one of the most acclaimed rappers in history. The ‘Euphoria’ musician has received more than 17 Grammy Awards, 29 BET Awards, and even won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018.
